Westman Bible Conference is the project of five average guys who wanted to do back-to-basics Bible for other average folks. WMBC is:

  • a basic picture of the Bible as one book
  • a connection point for Christians in the Western Manitoba region
  • a resource for encountering guest speakers available to minister to rural churches

Stuff to Check Out

WMBC 2011–John Feakes

Mr. Feakes is on team with CARE Ministries of Winnipeg. A dynamic speaker on apologetics, he will be presenting on the topics of sin and substitutionary atonement. Mr. Feakes says,

Sure, the Gospel message is nice, but it is absolutely worthless if it isn’t true! Early on I understood that…I simply could not divorce the “positiveness” of the message from its truthfulness. In other words, I could not present the Gospel to people if I could not reasonably demonstrate that it was true. There’s a million other world views out there, each competing for people’s minds. If the Bible is true, we ought to be able to defend it intellectually.

W2: Why Would a Loving God Allow Suffering?

Creation Ministries International is known for common-sense answers to some tough questions about the Bible. For instance, why would a loving God allow suffering?

One of their presenters, geologist Dr. Emil Silvestru, joined us for WMBC 2009. Listen to audio of his presentations here.

Jesus and Human Nature

“When all came to all, the utmost that they would be able to allege would be that he had healed a withered hand on the Sabbath. Overlooking the commendation due for the miracle of healing, they laid the emphasis upon its being done on the Sabbath; and held up their hands with horror that such a secular action should be performed on such a sacred day.”

~C.H. Spurgeon, Jesus Angry with Hard Hearts, 1886

One of the driving forces behind the establishment of Westman Bible Conference is the experience we’ve all had of what people do when they forget how to live by trusting Christ and His Word: naturally, we all tend to fall back on religious practice, whether traditional or fad-based, because it’s what we can do without Jesus.

Spurgeon’s words lay open the reality of how insufficient that is for being truly Christlike.

“I am the vine, you are the branches; he who abides in Me, and I in him, he bears much fruit; for apart from Me you can do nothing.”

~John 15:5 (NASB)

Seek the Lord while He may be found;
Call upon Him while He is near.
Let the wicked forsake his way,
And the unrighteous man his thoughts;
And let him return to the Lord,
And He will have compassion on him;
And to our God,
For He will abundantly pardon.
“For My thoughts are not your thoughts,
Neither are your ways My ways,” declares the Lord.
” For as the heavens are higher than the earth,
So are My ways higher than your ways,
And My thoughts than your thoughts.”

~Isaiah 55:6-9 (NASB)

The board and volunteers of WMBC hope this year’s conference uplifts and encourages you as we come together to look to that higher way. Whether you join us by internet or in person, may God richly bless this weekend for His glory.

W1: Canadian Fossil Doesn’t Quite Prove Evolution

In February 2009, Associates for Biblical Research reported on the Tiktaalik fossil fish.

The scientific world was recently rocked by the discovery of what appeared to be the unquestionable missing link between fish and land-dwelling amphibians, one of the classic images of evolutionary theory. The fossilized remains, which contained only part of the creature, were discovered in Arctic Canada and given the scientific name Tiktaalik roseae. It was touted worldwide as indisputable evidence that tetrapods (four-footed, land-dwelling animals) evolved from fish that had crawled out of the water.

However, as with so many other instances in the incredibly complicated search for origins, Tiktaalik is not quite the Golden Fleece paleontologists have been looking for. Read the whole article at ABR >>

2010 Speakers: Calvin Smith

Joining us from Creation Ministries International for Conference 2010 will be Mr. Calvin Smith.

Calvin has spoken on creation topics since 2001 at youth groups, Christian schools, churches and small groups. He has also appeared on the CTS live call-in television program ‘Nite Lite Live’ several times, speaking about the creation/evolution issue. He also co-hosts CMI’s TV show Creation Magazine Live!

Through lots of reading, Calvin has become well equipped to talk about many aspects of science and history that relate to the creation/evolution controversy. He has consistently immersed himself in creation apologetics through seminars, classes, scientific papers and hands-on opportunities to study. When asked what formal science background he has, Calvin responds, “the same as Charles Darwin. His only formal training was in Theology!” (You can read Calvin’s full ministry profile at Creation.com.)

Calvin has interesting information to share about discoveries surrounding cell composition at the molecular level. Calvin is interested in molecular robots called ‘kinesins’. The ‘kinetic’ sound of the name implies motion, and that is certainly the case.

This 2006 video took 14 months to create, and was a joint project between animators at Harvard and Yale. It’s a theoretical rendering of the processes involved in protein transfer within a leukocyte.

In this article at Creation.com, Calvin writes,

Every cell also has ‘general laborers’ in the form of miniature genetic robots called ‘kinesins’. These are a family of tiny biological machines that transport material around in cells. They bring things to certain locations and remove parts that shouldn’t be there. They really are organic robots!

Amazingly, kinesins are inside every living plant and animal on Earth! (Even single-celled creatures have kinesins.) This suggests that evolutionists must factor this in when proposing the ‘first living thing’. It seems unlikely that the first living thing could have functioned without kinesins when everything today has them.

Bonus Session: Bob Dunlop on Christian Fellowship

Pastor Bob Dunlop

Guest Speaker, Faith Fellowship Baptist Church

During his most recent period of ministry in Manitoba, Pastor Bob Dunlop and his wife were mentors to one of WMBC’s board members and wife. WMBC is delighted to share this sermon, given at our host venue the day after the conference, with Pastor Dunlop’s permission.

Liveblogging from Christianity on Trial Conference

One of the goals of WMBC is to maintain connections and support among other conferences in the prairie region, as there are several which cover different areas of doctrine and Christian thinking. These connections allow us to provide references to other events for those interested in accessing further Bible teaching. This weekend, Christianity on Trial is taking place in Regina, Saskatchewan. In many ways, the annual topics of COT pick up where WMBC’s foundational focus leaves off.

Interviewed by Westman Bible Conference volunteer Cathi-Lyn Dyck, Master of Ceremonies Mr. John Plantz explains the idea behind Christianity on Trial, and speaker/apologist John Feakes of CARE Winnipeg explains his ministry and his presentation topics: the varying truth claims about who Jesus is in Mormonism, the Jehovah’s Witnesses and Islam.

As Mr. Feakes says, “We want to engage in this question of whether not God actually exists. I think science and philosophy all come together to create a very strong case–a very irrefutable case–that there is a Creator there. Then we take it a step further and defend the Bible historically; and show that the God that’s there is in fact the God of the Bible.”

Is The Cross the Only Way to God?

On June 22, 2005, the United Nations hosted a groundbreaking one-day inter-religious event titled the Conference on Interfaith Cooperation for Peace. …The purpose of this conference, which is visible in its title, was to propel the world peace/interfaith agenda to a more substantial level. By its nature this is a political move. Read the full post »
